Salvage Supperclub is a collaborative cooking campaign championing the return of young people to the kitchen. But this time, it’s on our terms.

Masterchef be damned, we’re on a mission to lower our collective bar for what’s considered respectable in the kitchen and embrace a new way of cooking together.

What

This October and November, young people around the nation are getting together with whatever’s left in their fridge, freezer or pantry, to cook up good food, save the planet and have a bloody good time doing it.

A group of mates, dates or associ-ates get together, pool their random ingredients and make something delicious. Or at the very least, mostly edible.

Why

You can’t always see it, but Australia is currently in the midst of an epidemic. We’re practically swimming in food waste. Every year we toss out a ridiculous 4 million tonnes of food, costing us $20 billion. Think of how many plates of smashed avo that is. Our hearts weep.

The thing is, when food waste breaks down in landfill, it ain't benign either. It releases methane gas, which is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. In fact, if food waste was a country, it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitting country in the world, topped only by USA and China.

To tackle this problem head on, we think we need to take it up a notch. Let’s cook ourselves out of this mess.
